| Tiger Global Management | Tiger style | 2001 | NY - New York | Chase Coleman III | Williams College | Tiger Management | ViewTiger Global Management - Chase comes from a well-connected family—his dad is a law firm partner, his mom runs an interior design business, and his grandfather was the managing partner at the prestigious law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell. On top of that, his grandfather married a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch governor of New Amsterdam before it was handed over to the British. Chase went to Deerfield Academy, one of the top boarding schools in the country, and then to Williams College, an elite liberal arts college, where he co-captained the lacrosse team. He grew up in Locust Valley, an affluent town in Long Island, New York, hanging out with Julian Robertson’s son. After graduating in 1997, Chase joined Julian’s firm, Tiger Management, as a tech analyst. He stayed there for three years until Julian shut the fund down around 2000\. Julian then handed Chase $25 million to manage—making him one of the famed “Tiger Cubs” in hedge fund history. In 2001, Chase launched his own fund, originally called Tiger Technology, later renamed Tiger Global. In 2003, he brought on Scott Shleifer, a former Blackstone analyst, to lead the firm’s push into private markets. Tiger Global took a beating in 2022 during the growth stock selloff—The Wall Street Journal called it one of the biggest losses ever. Scott stepped down as head of private investing at the end of 2023\. Today, Tiger Global still manages around $55 billion. They're known for their TMT long/short strategy and classic Tiger-style approach: long the good companies, short the bad ones. Like Viking Global, they keep a low profile, so I don’t have much visibility into their investment process—and I’m not looking to get sued trying to find out. | $78.0B (03/27/2026) | 78000000000 | NYC |
| Adage Capital Management | Contrarian | 2001 | MA - Boston | Multiple | Multiple | Harvard Endowment | ViewAdage Capital Management; Adage Capital Management, L.P. was founded in 2001 by Robert Atchinson and Phillip Gross, both former alums of the Harvard Endowment. They charge a 0.50% management fee and a 20% performance fee, but here's the twist: they only earn the performance fee on returns that beat the S&P 500, including dividends. So, if they’re down 3% but the S&P 500 is down 5%, they still get paid for the 2% outperformance. And if their performance falls short of the benchmark in the following year, they refund up to half of their fees.; Atchinson and Gross, who first met as investment analysts at Harvard’s endowment in the mid-1980s, have distinct focuses—Atchinson specialized in aerospace and defense, while Gross concentrated on healthcare and drug companies.; To avoid further scrutiny, Atchinson convinced Gross to leave in 2001 and start their own firm.; Adage employs a 130% long / 30% short long/short equity strategy, occasionally dipping into private investments.
